In inventing the idea of law, Greek philosophy enacted a decisive gesture to provide for the law &#8211; but it is a gesture whose violence has not yet been sufficiently considered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurent de Sutter<\/strong> is Professor of Law Theory at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. His work focuses on the cultural history of law, in particular the link between law and transgression in the history of European legal culture. He is the author of many books, which have been translated into a dozen languages &#8211; including <em>L&#8217;\u00e2ge de l&#8217;anesth\u00e9sie<\/em> (Les Liens Qui Lib\u00e8rent, 2017), <em>Apr\u00e8s la loi<\/em> (Puf, 2018) and <em>Pornographie du contemporain<\/em> (La Lettre Vol\u00e9e, 2018).
