The Fondation Thalie is supporting the production of the work Di\u0308a\u0300 s p o r a\u00a0 <\/em>by the artist, Binta Diaw<\/strong>. The artwork will be shown on the occasion of the 12th Berlin Biennale, whose curation this year is assured by the artist Kader Attia<\/strong>. The Biennale will be opening its doors on Saturday, June 11 2022.<\/p>\n

This support reflects the commitments of the Fondation, who works to promote the emancipation of women artists within society and to valorize artistic practices who create new narratives faced with the environmental issues of today<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Di\u0308a\u0300 s p o r <\/em>a installation submerges us in the rich history of the African braid and its place within the transmission of vernacular knowledge. The artist is inspired by the practice of braiding as a vector of social emancipation during the diasporas of the XIXth century whilst in reflection of the cultural and post-colonial studies from the 1970s to the present. Presented in 2021 at the Galerie Ce\u0301cile Fakhoury (Abidjan), Di\u0308a\u0300 s p o r a <\/em>will be shown at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art from June 11 to September 18 2022. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in 1995, Binta Diaw<\/strong> is a senegalo-italian visual artist based in Milan (IT). She studied Fine Arts at the Fine Arts Academy of Brera in Milan and graduated from l’ESAD Grenoble-Valence in France. Her installations comment on social phenomena such as migration and immigration, anthropology, the body in relation to nature, and the notions of identity. Defying the Western gaze and subverting reality, her practice questions the perception of italianess and africaness in relation to her own cultural heritage. Binta Diaw explores a multitude of layers from her own identity, as a social body and her position as a black woman in a Western context.<\/p>\n

The artist has just been awarded the Pujade-Lauraine Prize of 2022<\/strong>. She is represented by the\u00a0Galerie Ce\u0301cile Fakhoury<\/strong><\/a>, Abidjan, Dakar, Paris,\u00a0her work was recently exhibited in March 2022 at the Galerie ChertL\u00fcdde<\/strong><\/a>, Berlin.<\/p>\n
